Recent research has revealed Australians significantly underestimate the role of family history in developing Macular Degeneration, the leading cause of blindness and vision loss in Australia.

People  at risk, which are those over 50 years or with a family history of Macular Degeneration, should have their eyes tested and macula checked. Family history is a risk factor, just as it is with other conditions such as heart disease and breast cancer. This is why it is critical for family members to also have their eyes tested and macula checked.

The research also found an estimated 2.1 million Australians over the age of 50 years, those most at risk, are unaware that having a parent with Macular Degeneration increases their chances of developing the disease. Alarmingly, one in three Australians also believe that vision loss caused by Macular Degeneration is just a normal part of ageing.

There are simple steps everyone can take to reduce their risk of developing Macular Degeneration and Australians should start by talking to their family about risk reduction measures. This includes having an eye test, adopting a healthy lifestyle and eating foods that are good for eye health including fish, foods with low GI and dark leafy vegetables.

Australians should make their family’s macular health a priority by having their eyes tested and macular checked, especially those who are most at risk, people over the age of 50 and those with a family history of the disease.

Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in Australia today yet knowing whether you have it or if even you are a “glaucoma suspect” or not is usually as easy as seeing an eye health professional (usually an optometrist) and undergoing a simple eye check says Tony Burgun from Burgun & Brennan optometrists.

World Glaucoma Week (March 11-17) is a reminder to get your eyes checked for this hidden disease. Glaucoma Australia says 300,000 Australians have some form of glaucoma and half are undiagnosed.

Glaucoma is a group of diseases that damage the optic nerve (the nerve of sight) carrying messages from the eye to the brain. This can lead to loss of vision if not detected early says Mr Burgun.

Are you at-risk?

Glaucoma can occur at any age; however the risk increases significantly as you grow older.

Tony Burgun recommends regular routine eye checks  from the age of 50 but people with risk factors such as having a family history of glaucoma or being of African descent should be checked earlier, from the age of 40.

If you do have a family history of glaucoma you have an 8-times higher risk. Try to find out if your parents or siblings have glaucoma.

Other risk factors for glaucoma include:

• Short sightedness or eye pressure >21mmHg
• Diabetes
• Smoking
• Ongoing use of steroids
• Migraine, eye injury, high blood pressure

How is glaucoma diagnosed?

Glaucoma is detected by a simple check of the optic nerve with an ophthalmoscope.

A test of the eye pressure (tonometry) and an assessment of vision may also be done. Early detection of glaucoma is vital as lost vision cannot be recovered.

Treatment to lower the pressure within the eye can usually prevent further deterioration. Eye drops are usually sufficient, but sometimes laser treatment or surgery is used.
